Context
My work is about surface; I am intrigued by how I can build up layers and texture through the materials I use. I draw my inspiration from lost objects that I have collected from various places, objects such as: seed heads, skulls, shells, pebbles, flowers and other ‘lost’ items. I work with a variety of fabrics some conventional/traditional such as velvets, linens, upholstery fabrics, satins, and organza’s and other less traditional materials such as paper, gold and silver leaf, leaves, flowers and thin metal. I am also very interested in the quality of line that can be created using a sewing machine; I see my sewing machine as a drawing tool. I also use a variety of materials to embellish my work including: antique mother of pearl and glass buttons, beads, antique/vintage carded buttons, dress patterns and various found objects. I am interested in incorporating text within my work and I often use excerpts from old books, greetings cards and other sources.
